A very rare and wonderful Early Georgian Irish provincial silver two-handled cup of excellent weight and quality. Campana form with quintessentially Irish twin harp-shaped handles, a reeded girdle and a spreading circular base, engraved on one side with a crest of a double-headed eagle.

Struck with the makers mark and STERLING. Joseph Johns of Limerick, was an important figure who was both Sheriff and Mayor of Limerick and had a long career. For a similar example see Douglas Bennett Collecting Irish Silver p. This crest is for families Ashbee, Atkinson, Ballingall, Blaxland, Boyle, Cassy, Crumbie, Gays, Glascott, Goodman, Greaves, Hanrott, Harrison, Kilner, Kingdon, Lindsay, Lloyd, Longsdon, Lumley, Meade, Noone, Reid, Rossiter, Stephen, Strong and Stronge.

The cup is in lovely collectors condition, having some age-related wear to the marks and the crest. Joseph Johns mark is unmistakable though. It is possible that the handles have been re-seated at some time during the nearly 300 years since it the cup was made. The cup stands firmly on a flat surface and does not wobble.
