Lovely little strainer or sifter which makes a beautiful eye catching accent to the table, the way it has a figural design of a large scale poppy. This antique sterling silver over the cup tea strainer has a wooden handle with some worn black paint on it. Beautiful naturalistic form with the lifelike flower petals.
Antique piece, dating to around the turn of the century. No monogram anywhere on the piece. Marked Sterling twice - one under the handle, and the other on the side of the petals.
In estate condition considering age, there is some tarnish and pale brownish? Discoloration especially around the center of the floral details in those hard to reach areas. It seems to have held its shape perfectly as I see no pin dings or dents, or ripples where they don't below. Some faint surface wear and scratching from use and polish over the years but presents beautifully. Please note though that due to age, it is not in mint condition. Makes a very beautiful statement.
Strainer measures almost 7 inches in length so it makes an impression and the strainer bowl is about 3-1/4 inches in diameter at the widest part. It weighs 23 grams (including the handle which is not sterling of course) on my little digital scale.
Tea aficionados say that the tea has better flavor when the loose leaves are brewed in the tea pot. These little strainers are held over the teacup while you pour the tea from the pot, to catch any leaves that come out, effectively straining it on it's way into the cup. A very decorative AND useful item!
