Leipzig Germany Hand Wrought Solid Silver Tankard Cup with Lid Hallmarked GS or. Gottfried Schmidt c1680 Maker 3 Ball Feet Ball Finial. Presented is a beautiful hand wrought Sterling Silver tankard cup with lid with hallmarks and no monogram.It is marked with GS makers mark and a partial mark that appears to be an I and a times-new roman font mark F I believe indicate for silver in Leipzig Germany made by Gottfried Schmidt in c1680. I have posted pictures of my research on these marks in the photos above. This great tankard has three ball feet with a detachable lid with a matching ball shaped finial. It has a swirl gadroon decoration up the bottom of the cup to middle of tankard, a hand wrought detailed lid with matching rounded gadroon surrounding a stepped bevel decoration with engraved scrolling leaf motif leading to a floral shaped medallion beneath a ball finial.
This is quite the antique and has had what appears to have more than a few repairs in the past and has some minor dents in the ball feet as well as push in of all three ball feet visible from the interior bottom, a dents in the ball finial of lid, a ding in the bottom rounded edge, a visible repair on the side appearing as a crack and rough surface with what appears as old soldering visible in the interior with pin-prick hole, a repair visible in the lid in gadroon decoration. While it has no monogram it does have a scratched identifier on the side of what may be a 16 and has some fine scratches from use and care.I have an interesting assortment of items listed so, please look at my other auctions. 6 ¾ Inches tall with lid, 4 ½ inches tall to rim of tankard, 4 3/8 Inches wide. 7.6 ounces on my postal scale or 215 grams. Condition: Some dents and dings including a roughness around the middle of the cup where the gadroon lower portion meets the smoother higher half of cup. All three ball feet have dents. There is a push in that is visible in the interior bottom from all three ball feet. There is a ding in the bottom rounded edge. There is a visible repair on the side of the cup in the middle with a tiny hole allowing for a small leak appearing as roughness with a crack on the exterior and visible in interior as rough surface. Some old soldering visible in the interior side next to repair. A repair visible in the lid in gadroon decoration as well as a dent in the ball finial handle. A scratched identifier on the side of the cup of what may be a 16.
