Brilliant french antique sterling silver wine or cognac taster dating to the late 18th or early 19th century. With a reeded strap handle, the bowl has an ornate and unusual design which is unlike any we've ever come across before.
The alternating concave/convex cupules are encircled by dainty "pearls" which also drape around the diameter of the bowl in a swag or garland pattern. The cup bears the "premier coq" provincial stamp, indicating a fineness of 950/1000 parts silver (higher than sterling) and used between 1798 and 1809. We also find the encircled vieillard guarantee hallmark. The maker's mark reads L O with a P or image below and star above; we have not been able to identify this maker through online registries. Most interesting, perhaps, is the engraving which reads Fete Napoleon, Mairie de St Jn de Braye.
This was added to the cup, then (very early 1800's), to celebrate Napoleon at the town hall of Saint Jean de Braye, a small commune which is an arrondissement of the larger city, Orleans. One can imagine the excitement and zeal of the citizens of France during this time, as Napoleon led the country to become a powerful, dominant empire before its collapse in 1815... This very intriguing wine taster may have, instead, been intended for use with cognac due to its small size, measuring 2.75 inches in diameter (3.4 inches with the handle) and weighing 41 grams.Condition is excellent; we found a slight impression to the silver at the base, too insignificant to be called a dent or ding. Aside from normal micro-scratching, condition is remarkable for this historical piece that has been enjoyed for more than 200 years. As the items that we sell are often fragile and irreplaceable, great care is taken during packaging to ensure their safe transit and arrival. Items must be in the same condition as when received.
