Boxed German Silver Wilhelm II Wolfhound Stirrup Cup. A beautifully detailed heavy German silver stirrup cup with a dedication to Wilhelm II. A stirrup cup is a "parting cup" given to guests, especially when they are leaving on horseback and have their feet in the stirrups. It is also the traditional drink (usually port or sherry) served at the meet, prior to a traditional foxhunt. The term can describe both the drink or the cup that such a drink is served in. The cup is of German silver, modelled as the head of a wolf hound. It has a flared rim engraved Deutschen Kaiser Und Jägermeister Wilhelm II which translates as German Emperor and Hunt Master Wilhelm II. The interior has a gilt finish. The piece is hallmarked for 835 silver with a makers mark for the German company Bruckmann & Söhne of Heilbronn, Germany. The piece bears no makers signature but we have seen other stirrup cups, very similar in style attributed to a W. The cup comes in a presentation box stamped in gilt with a W below a crown, similar to the cipher of Kaiser Wilhelm II. The cup measures 18cm (7 inches) in length with a rim diameter of 10cm (4 inches). It weighs 1.01 Kg. The box measures 13cm by 13cm by 20cm (5 ¼ inches by 5 ¼ inches by 8 inches) and together with cup weighs1.61 Kg. The cup is in a lovely condition with very minimal wear but no damages. The box is in good order. Wilhelm II (27 January 1859 4 June 1941) was the last German Emperor(Kaiser) and King of Prussia, reigning from 15 June 1888 until his abdication on 9 November 1918 shortly before Germany's defeat in World War I. He was the eldest grandchild of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and related to many monarchs and princes of Europe, including King George V and Emperor Nicholas II of Russia, whose wife, Alexandra, was Wilhelm and George's first cousin. Bruckmann & Söhne (1805 1973) was a silver producer situated in Heilbronn in South West Germany. The Bruckmann firm produced many pieces by leading German designers.
