The Spanish Dollar or "Pillar Dollar" is an early type of silver piece of eight featuring two faces of the globe between the Pillars of Hercules and Straits of Gibraltar. Used by many countries as the first international currency because of its uniformity in standard and milling characteristics, it remained legal tender in the United States until the Coinage Act of 1857. On one side of the coin we see crowned hemispheres flanked by crowned pillars with the lettering UTRA QUE UNUM G 1769 G, meaning "Both as One" Guatemala 1769 Guatemala. The other side of the coin bears a crowned arms shield flanked by the initial P and value 8. Lettering reads CAROLUS III D G HISPAN ET IND REX, meaning Carlos 3rd, King of Spain and the Indies by the Grace of God.
