The total weight of this magnificent, Meiji Period, Japanese 950 Sterling Silver, Lily Pad teacup & saucer is 4.4 oz. The cup measures 2 " to top of handle and 2-1/2" in diameter. The Saucer measures 4 5/8" by 3 1/2" with irregular crimped edge. Wonderful hand crafted Japanese, sterling silver, teacup & saucer marked only with hand inscribed characters on the base (see photo). The saucer in the form of a lily pad, with a solid cast 950 silver snake threaded through holes in the pad.
The snake with very fine detail - you can see every scale, the gilt eye with inset stone, and each individual tooth. Another lily pad beautifully turns into the cup and the solid cast silver stem, becomes the handle. Both pieces marked with random hand chased'blemishes' adding realism.
Not marked as silver but was tested and found to be of at least coin purity. The Meiji era , is a Japanese era which extended from September 8, 1868 through July 30, 1912. It is marked on the bottom of the saucer with the maker/designer marks (see photo). This is the most extraordinary piece of Japanese silver that I have ever encountered. The quality is such that the more you look at the better it becomes. One of a kind with beyond belief aesthetic detail. P lease read the entire description and review the photos carefully before making an offer.
