1903 Large Western Morning News Sterling Silver Trophy Cup. An enormous Sterling Silver trophy cup, assayed for London and dated 1903.
The front of the cup is engraved with the following dedication: "The Harold Harmsworth Championship Cup Presented to The Plymouth Press Bowling Club by The Western Morning News 1950". On the reverse are the names of its winners from 1950 to 1971. The exact style of the cup is hard to pinpoint.
In large parts it is minimalist with the sharp ridges typical of Art Deco. The handles however, are more elaborate and utilise some of the naturalistic elements of Art Nouveau. The cup has a removable lid and is complete with a substantial ebonised-wooden base, bearing details for the prominent Plymouth retailer'Page, Keen & Page LTD. The cup is stamped with the distinctive mark of Edward Barnard & Sons Ltd, who were active in London during the early Edwardian era. The condition of the trophy is excellent, with only a few minor scuffs to the foot rim and lid, as well some light wear to the pedestal base.
