1772 Sterling Silver Loving Cup Trophy. Trinity College Cambridge Oration Prize
Rare George III sterling silver loving cup hallmarked London 1772 by Charles Wright. The loving cup has been engraved as a presentation trophy prize by Trinity College, Cambridge University and the engraving reads. This Oration Prize, the Legacy of Dr. Adjudged to John Porter by Trinity College Cambridge 1772. The package includes an unused Edwardian era postcard depicting Trinity College Cambridge, founded A. Width (tip of handle to tip of handle): 175 mm. Diameter of rim: 95 mm. Diameter of base: 85 mm. Maker's Mark: Charles Wright. Summary: Despite the condition issues which I have highlighted, this oration trophy remains a very interesting and collectable item. Most of the damage is on the obverse of the trophy so it still displays well. At 246 years old, it is one of the oldest sterling silver trophies I have found and weighs a heavy 388.8 gm.
